Lost distance clues

MikeQuinn007 had the great idea of searching the transcripts for concrete distance specifications. So I searched the scripts for the term "mile" and "kilometer" and made this list (sorted by episode).
EDIT 04/22/07: I've extended the list by the terms "click", "day", "North", "East", "South", "West" (thanks to Maverick for this idea).

Season 1

E01
Pilot: 6 hours in. Our radio went out, no one could see us. We turned back to land in Fiji, by the time we hit turbulence we were 1000 miles off course. They're looking for us in the wrong place.
E07
JACK: No. Kate, I'm -- I just don't understand why you won't come with me. Us. It's maybe a mile up there, if that. (distance between the beach camp and caves)
E13
LOCKE: Whether you stay is up to you. The camp is 4 miles due west. (distance between the place Locke tied up Boone and the beach camp)

JACK: Locke? Where'd you see Locke?
SAYID: About a mile East of here, walking through the jungle. At least I think it's East.
(confirming that Boone is tied up somewhere east of the camp because Sayid met Locke on his way back to the camp)
E15
LOCKE: About a mile north. We were looking for the dog. (Jack found Claire after being kidnapped by Ethan)
E21
LOCKE: We found one of the smugglers about a half a click West of here dressed as a priest -- Nigerian currency in his pockets, and this. Now you're armed and I'm not. Does that earn me any trust?
E23
DANIELLE: Our ship went aground on this island 16 years ago. There were 6 of us -- my team, 6. At that time I was already 7 months pregnant. I delivered the infant myself. The baby and I were together for only 1 week when I saw black smoke -- a pillar of black smoke 5 kilometers inland. That night they came -- they came and took her -- Alex. They took my baby. And now, they're coming again. They're coming for all of you. (may be the distance between Rousseau's first camp and an outpost of the Others)

MICHAEL: Look, so, we're going approximately North by Northeast. So, hopefully that puts us into a shipping lane, or we hit some land. (on the raft)
E24
ARZT: Hold on, wait, hold on. What are we a couple miles inland? [to Danielle] A tsunami probably swept it here, huh, right? (talking about the position of the Black Rock)
E25
MICHAEL: We're 15 miles out. We could be here for weeks. If that battery runs out... (position of the raft when Walt was abducted)

Season 2

E01
JACK: Uh, Locke found, uh, a hatch in the ground about a half a mile from here. We left to blow it open so that we could hide inside -- so all of us could hide inside, in case -- but that doesn't matter now because it's not going to work. There's no way for all of us to get down in there tonight. (distance caves - hatch)
E06
MICHAEL: By what? Them? I thought they lived a day back that way?
(hinting the distance between Arrow and the Others)
E07
BERNARD: We've been walking for 3 days straight, Ana. (distance between the tail section crash site and the pit)
E10
CHARLIE: Yes, I saw your plane. It's about a kilometer that way. (distance between Eko's smokey encounter - beechcraft)
E11
JACK: You said these people were two days across the island.(hinting the distance to the Arrow/Pit)
SAWYER: Yeah, and they took Cindy less than a mile from our camp. (distance of the place Shannon was shot)

LOCKE [to Sawyer]: When you came across the island what side was the ocean on? [Sawyer looks around and points] You came from the East, Michael's heading North.
E13
SAWYER: I heard her scream. Found her out in the jungle about a half a click from here. (when Charlie "abducted" Sun)
E14
SAYID: And you were in a cave for all that time?
GALE: Off the beach on the North shore of the island.
SAYID: How far from this beach to where you were captured?
GALE: I don't know.
SAYID: How many days' walk?
GALE: 2 -- 2 days.

SAYID: This is at least a day's walk.(distance to Henry Gale's balloon)
E19
BERNARD: Yes, Hurley, we're going to need a lot more rocks. There's a lava field about a half mile inland that's loaded with them. We're going to haul them out in 2 man teams. So, you guys double up, and I am going to start sketching out the letters in the sand. Let's do this. (could be indicating that they're close to the crater)
E20
SAYID: If you want to do something nice for Libby, there's a beautiful beach 3 kilometers from here. You could take her there. (distance beach camp - romantic beach)

MICHAEL: Hey, John. I found them. After I left I hiked North back to where we were [he looks at Ana]. I hiked to the beach -- followed the shore line. A day later I saw one. (but he's lying)
E22
MR. FRIENDLY: You got a problem, Michael?
MICHAEL: You march me day and night without any rest. Yeah, my problem is I'm tired.
MR. FRIENDLY: Well, I'd offer to knock you out and carry you, but we're here.
(distance between the capure of Michael and the fake camp)

Season 3

E02
SAYID: Jack knows we're out here. He's counting on our signal. Perhaps he's not able to see the smoke. If he's North of us, the mountains would block his view.
E06
LOCKE: I'll be back in an hour. (distance between beach camp and the place Eko is buried)

SAWYER: [Sigh] We ain't on our island. We're on another island, like Alcatraz, couple miles off shore. So unless you're a mermaid, or you got a boat, there ain't no point. (hinting the distance between Hydra and main island)
E07
JULIET: Your friends aren't going to make it back to your side of the island because we're not on that island. We're on a smaller island two miles offshore. (confirming the distance between Hydra and main island)
E11
SAYID: We're still heading north on a bearing of 305.

SAYID: We've been walking for two days, following a compass bearing provided by the carvings on a stick! (hinting the distance to the Flame)
E18
CHARLIE: Its an eight hour walk, one way! (distance between beach camp and Naomi)
E19
NAOMI: A ship. Freighter. About 80 nautical miles West of here. We're part of a search and recovery team.
E21
JACK: You better get going. Rousseau says its about a day's walk up to the radio tower. (distance beach - radio tower)

JACK: Everyone's gathering down at the South end of the beach. No-one's staying behind but the shooters.
E22/23
BEN: If we head North, we should get to em before they reach the tower. (Pascal Flats - Radio Tower)

Season 4

E01
KATE: I found her trail. She's headed West across the Island. (Naomi's escape from the radio tower)
E02
SAWYER: Why are you going East? Thought you said the Barracks were due South. (coming from the cockpit)

DAN: Its Charlotte, only three kilometers from here. (distance between the spot Naomi died and Charlotte landed on the island)
E03
JACK: How long would it take to get to the beach and back?

JULIET: A couple of hours.
(distance between the location the helicopter went down and the beach camp)
E05
JULIET: You're boat's forty miles off the coast, it should have taken them what, twenty minutes to get there? So why aren't you worried?
E07
KATE: Once you hit the stream, you want to head northwest, pretty much in a straight line for about a day and a half. (distance and direction from the beach camp to the barracks)

Hey Losty, you should update this for the new episodes. Maybe also try words other then Mile and Kilometer. Click or Klick ( = 1 km ), Day, Hour, River, Stream, cliff etc. Anything that would give us a landmark, time reference etc.

Maverick.

Hi Maverick,

thanks for your great idea. I've done this search manually and this is the reason why I've only searched the two terms (my next idea was to search for North, East, South and West).
To simplify it for me, I'll write a small script to search these terms and I'll add your suggestions to the list of words to check. And of course I'll also search the new episodes. :)

Hey Losty, These are the items I recently noticed. Let me know what you think. Thanks a lot,

Mike.

Seperate screen captures from episode 01x18-"Numbers" with the same square, that would seem to minimize the possibilty of an artifact. One drawing I downloaded, the other I created.

Downloaded screen shot

created screen shot

Screen shot from episode 03x02-"Glass Ballerina"

Possible islet, prior to Sayids marking, low water area

Sceen shot from episode 01x13-"Heart and Minds"

possible "x" mark, small islet, pier. Also possible description of numbers being water depth at low tide.

Sorry Losty, I mislabeled a screen shot and missed this one.

Screen shot from episode 01x13-"Heart and Minds"

possible "x" mark, small islet, pier. Also possible description of numbers being water depth at low tide.

As far a Sayid praying, I'm sure we will come up with an explanation his praying while faceing the beach. I wouldn't even want to venture a guess right now.

Hey Mike,

again, totally awesome findings! It's great how you discover these items (I'm always wondering how I could miss these things after you've posted them).

You're absolutely right about the first two screenshots. It doesn't look like an artifact. The first screenshot was posted as a gif originally (you can see that it's colors were decreased to 256 using the "error diffusion" technique) and therefore has a very noisy distortion when zooming in. Your screenshot is MUCH better because you can distinguish the relevant information from the noise. I tried to make a screenshot of that scene too but it was very dark and became unusabel when I tried to lighten it up. So I'm very happy you've posted it! And I'm pretty sure that the spot you've identified as well as the two black spots you've discovered some time ago (the one right of this spot and the one at the bottom) are also marks on the map.

The numbers in the third and fourth screen could indeed show the depth of the water in that area. Though, I have to admit that I'm not so familiar with sea maps.

I don't know if it's really an islet Sayid is marking in the third screenshot. Before he puts his hand on the map you see that there's already a big black spot (that looks like a marking) on it and then he writes something on the map. So I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't an islet but part of a letter or coastline. The black spot mentioned above doesn't seem to be a marking from Sayid, because you can also see it in the screenshots from "Solitary". So maybe it's really an islet. But what would that mean for your postion of the Fusies camp?

The cross mark in the fifth screenshot somehow looks different to the other ones on the map but it sure seems to be an "X". And I like the idea that the lines near the coastlines are low tide marks. Though, some of the numbers seem to be contradicting the low tide marks (e.g. the '15'/'13').

I'm not sure what item you've marked as a pier. Is it the little grey spot below this line or something in the circle? But west of this location seem to be a thin cross mark within the low tide mark (but I'm sure you've already discovered it :)).

TheLostMap said...

There is an "8" with an arrow and a "15" marked, but I don't think these are depths, I rather think they are the extent of the beach at low tide (they are with-in the low tide mark.)
I didn't realize the item Sayid marked allready had a black mark. In that case, I have no idea what it it. As far as the other islet, I would have to look at the screen shots of the fusies camp to see if this would have any affect, but i doubt it, it being so far away (the islet that Sayid did not mark).
I think the thin cross mark you are mentioning is part of the arrow showing the first french camp. To see what may be a pier clearly, you would have to at least double the size of the map. It's with-in the circle marked"Pier?"

I can't remember the other two markings that may not be artifacts. If you get a chance could you just circle the general area (I don't want you to waste time trying to acually find them; I'm sure I can locate them if I know the location) So many item, I forget. LOL.

LostySmurf said...

Ok, I see your point regarding the numbers and it makes sense to me (well, actually it's the only sensible explanation for these numbers I've ever heard :)).

Hmmm, the pier (the "U" shaped thing) looks more like a slope to me and it's odd to have it in this area of shallow water. I think it could be something but I'm not very sure.

Here some caps of the black spot (sorry for the quality - I've to make some better ones of these scenes):
1 2

And these are the spots on your other screenshot:3

And sorry, I forgot to post my statement about the tiny islet (the one Sayid didn't mark), so my question was about the black spot islet, because it's so close to your current assumption for the Fusies camp.

I agree that the tiny islet NW seems to be to far offshore to be seen from the Fusies beach. But it could be something important (there are some theories about the Hydra being somewhere in this place).

TheLostMap said...

I have no idea what the black mark is. Could it be the statue of the foot?

TheLostMap said...

Oh, thanks for the screen shots of the items on the map.

LostySmurf said...

Hey Mike!

yeah, IMO the foot statue seems to be the simplest answer.

Thanks again for your great screenshot and discoveries!

TheLostMap said...

Hey Losty,

I think you might be right concernig the mark on the map being the statue of the foot. I was able to get a screen shot of the map just before Sayid placed his hand over the map. It was already there, like you said. What's unusual is that its not a circle, but a square ( you may need to magnify the screen shot to see this) The square would agree with the remains of the foot foundation, and the screenshot agrees with the map as far as location is concerned.

Binocular view of foot

Boat view of foot

Map marking

As far as Sayid praying to Mecca, it's hard to get a orientation of hte boat. Take of look at this screen shot.

Sayid praying with view of beach

LostySmurf said...

Hey Mike,

thanks for the comment and the screenshots. Again, the screenshots are great (quality and timing)!

I think you're right about the orientation of the boat. My mistake was that I only took Sayids orientation on the boat into account and not the boat itself. So I think it could vary by ~ 45 degree.

It would be nice to see the Losties travel to the foot statue (preferably from their beach camp) to see if it's close to their beach. This would be a good clue for the position of the beach camp.

LostySmurf said...

Ooops, I meant ~ ±45 degree

I am not sure how valuable this is but I was just watching Par Avion again and I noticed something. Claire notes that the birds are flying *south*. Then at the end of the episode when the messenger gull is released into the flock it is implied that the same flock *later* flies over Kate, Lock, Daniel and Sayid as they are searching for the Baracks. This seems to suggest that the Barracks are indeed south of the beach, consistent with Ben's map.

LostySmurf said...

Thanks for the info. Hmmm, I think it's pretty hard to say whether it's meant to be the same flock or just a fancy scene transition.
